In a world captivated by space exploration, veteran astronaut Captain Barry “Butch” Wilmore offers something even more powerful: a testimony of faith.
His new memoir, Stuck in Space: An Astronaut’s Hope Through the Unexpected, on sale March 17 by The Heirloom Press, tells the story of his life, his unplanned, nearly 10-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS), and the unshakable faith in Jesus Christ that sustained him. Stuck in Space.
Wilmore writes openly about the moment spacecraft failures left him with limited control and how Scripture had already prepared his heart for a moment such as this.
“Long before the unplanned, almost 10-month stay aboard the ISS, Scripture had clearly shown me that absolutely everything we have in our lives is a gift from the Almighty and all-powerful God of the universe,” Wilmore shares.
More than a space memoir, Stuck in Space is a testimony that God is sovereign, Jesus saves, and no circumstance, no matter how distant or dangerous, is outside of His control. Wilmore’s story encourages believers facing seasons of fear, waiting, or uncertainty to trust God’s plan and timing.
The week prior to release, Wilmore will be visiting the Amazon region of South America, to distribute Bibles to as many people as he can prior to returning to the US to be honored by the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, the Pentagon, a book signing at the Museum of the Bible, and many institutions and media outlets.
Barry “Butch” Wilmore, U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.) and NASA astronaut, has flown three space missions and spent 464 days in orbit. A Tennessee native and Tennessee Tech graduate, he is a test pilot with over 8,000 flight hours and 663 carrier landings. He piloted the Space Shuttle Atlantis, commanded the International Space Station, and most recently led Boeing’s Starliner on its first crewed flight—a mission planned for eight days that stretched into nine months.
Known for his humility, steady leadership, and deep faith in Jesus Christ, Butch speaks worldwide on perseverance, leadership under pressure, and the majesty of creation that points to the Creator. Butch and his wife, Deanna, and their two daughters, Daryn and Logan, reside in Houston, Texas.
