Grammy-nominated classical and gospel singer Jubilant Sykes was fatally stabbed inside his Santa Monica home on Monday evening, allegedly by his son, authorities confirmed.
The Santa Monica Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an ongoing assault at a residence on Delaware Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Officers arrived to find the victim, an adult male, with severe injuries. Despite efforts by emergency responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as Sykes, 71, who had suffered stab wounds. His son, Micah Sykes, 31, was found inside the home and taken into custody without incident.
Sykes, a celebrated baritone, was known for his performances with orchestras and at prestigious venues globally. His portrayal of the Celebrant in the 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass earned him a Grammy nomination.
A neighbor and close friend of Sykes, Sammy Murphy, spoke to KTLA on Tuesday, recalling their friendship. “He was a good-hearted person, a great spirit, and a beautiful family man,” Murphy said. “He had an incredible voice.”
Murphy also mentioned that Sykes had three sons, adding that one of them had a troubled past.
Police are continuing their investigation, processing evidence from the scene, and have recovered a weapon.
