He started in the 1990s with hardcore mainstream rap group Three 6 Maffia.
He left that group, keeping his signature gritty southern style of delivery, but dedicated his new life to rapping lyrics that would edify Christ and evangelize young people. He is Mr. Del, a Christian Hip Hop and Rap innovator, whose 25-year music career has evolved into a blend of music, ministry, and leadership, solidifying his iconic status.
Mr. Del’s career has been a journey of breaking down barriers in music and in churches, small and large. He has an impressive catalog of albums that include HOPE DEALER, THRILLA, and LOVE NOIZE, which garnered GRAMMY® and Dove Award nominations and topped Billboard charts. After what he thought would be his departure from music and retirement from being a recording artist in 2020, Mr. Del returns from a five-year hiatus with a very personal and transparent album ptsd (Prior To Self Destruction).
“Within a short period of time, I experienced devastating losses – my pastor, my father, my oldest sister, and close friend, Gangsta Boo, all passed away,” Mr. Del shares. “It was the darkest time in my life, and the only way I knew how to purge myself from all the pain was to get in the studio. Since I was a child, music has been my therapist, and that is the reason I came back.”
ptsd (Prior To Self Destruction) is a 13-track album chronicling Mr. Del’s real-life fight through grief, mental wellness, and holding on to purpose. The emotional album has some dark but necessary tones in songs like “David Ruffin,” “numb,” and “Self Destruction.” ptsd (Prior To Self Destruction) isingeniously produced by powerhouses Carlos Broady (Kanye West, Notorious B.I.G., Nas, 50 Cent, Jay-Z), and DJ Squeeky (Young Dolph, Young Jeezy).
“This album is for all but has a particular focus for men who struggle with mental grief, depression, and ptsd,” Mr Del adds.
Mr. Del will soon launch a 25-city tour to celebrate his 25 years in music and ministry. His PTSD Therapy Tour will highlight him ‘informing’ songs instead of ‘performing’ songs. As a dynamic and engaging speaker, Mr. Del will talk about each song and the motivation behind the music. True to his nature, he will transparently share the inspiration to heal from the symptoms of issues.
