Gospel music artist Melvin Williams selected as U.S. Music Ambassador

In February 2011 gospel legend Melvin Williams was appointed US Music Ambassador for the US Department of State’s initiative, The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad administered by Jazz at Lincoln Center.

In the 1950s, the U.S. government sent Jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Dave Bruebeck across the globe to share America’s culture.

Melvin Williams is singing lead for his newly formed band, The Melvin Williams Group that is comprised of bassist/BGV, Castro Coleman, vocalist, Andre Tate and percussionist/BGV, Bridget Fleury.

During this 5 week tour, Williams will visit a selection of Europe and Eurasia countries like Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Georgia. His mission is to introduce and perform traditional gospel music through concerts and educational workshops to regions around the world that wouldn’t otherwise get much exposure to Gospel music.

“The mission of The Rhythm Road is to share America’s unique contribution to the world of music and to promote cross-cultural understanding and exchange among nations worldwide.

Building on the rich legacy of the legendary Jazz Ambassadors, the program has expanded in recent years to include music that is quintessentially American.”-Adrian Ellis, executive director of Jazz at Lincoln Center

The Melvin Williams Group is one of 10 ensembles selected as U.S. Music Ambassadors to represent The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad. Since 2006, the program has sent more than 100 musicians on tours to 97 different countries, most of them outside the reach of American music.

Melvin Williams has been in the industry for 50 years. His dedication to gospel music has garnered him 6-GRAMMY® award nominations and a host of Stellar Awards collectively as a solo artist and with The Williams Brothers.

Ja Rule to Begin Prison Sentence after Filming Christian Film

Lead actor of “I Fell in Love with a Church Girl” Ja Rule is getting ready to serve a two-year sentence for weapons possessions.

In a recent interview, the 35-year-old revealed that before preparing to serve his sentence he will end his Twitter feud with rapper 50 Cent.

He told The Life Files, “I just want to put it out to the world before I go in. It’s funny because, I’m about to go to jail, and my main concern is to make sure that I get this album done and out there for the fans.”

“I was a little ashamed of myself to be even involved with that. Because I’m like, yo, I’m 35 years old and I’m on Twitter beef? That’s not something I want to entertain, but I’m a man first, so I’m reading (expletive) like him sending Tweets and little things about me.”

Late last year, Ja Rule was cast in the faith-based film “I’m in Love with a Church Girl,” which chronicled the life of an ex-convict turned pastor. Pastor Galley Molina, shared his story on screen of how he was at the top of a major drug trafficking ring in the mid-1990s and turned to faith later.

The movie also co-stars Adrienne Bailon, Stephen Baldwin and TobyMac.

Molina shared with The Christian Post last year that during the filming “Ja Rule has been ministered to. He’s a dear friend. We’ve been praying for him a lot. He’s been open; he’s been so [receptive] to the word.”

The exact release date for the movie has not been announced. It is expected to be out this year.

Ja Rule is also set to feature in the original music inspired by the film, with artists such as Israel Houghton, Mary Mary, New Breed, TobyMac, Fred Hammond, India Arie, Beckah Shae, Anthony Hamilton, Third Day, Adrienne Bailon, T-Bone and others.

Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, is scheduled to begin his sentence on June 8, a day after his new album releases. He was convicted in December for having a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in his sports car in July 2007 after a concert.

According to The Associated Press, he is also scheduled to be sentenced on June 13 for tax evasion charges. He could face up to one year in prison and $100,000 in fines on each count.

Bernice King, Daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. Says Leaving New Birth Church Had Nothing to do With Bishop Eddie Long Settleme

In an exclusive interview with Rhodell Lewis of gospel radio station MyPraiseAtl, Rev. Bernice King explains why she decided to leave Eddie Long’s New Birth Church.

She said that it had nothing to do with Long’s settlement of his sexual misconduct case, and that she didn’t “resign” from any position since she was never employed by New Birth to begin with.

Bernice said she set down to speak with Bishop Eddie Long way before the controversy received legs as a result of the sexual allegations by 4 young men accusers.

A plethora of media outlets were speculating that the move was due to the Bishop Eddie Long settlement.  King thanks Bishop Eddie Long and New Birth, and says she will begin her own ministry.  King says she doesn’t know if she will start a church, but she will start a ministry.  Click the picture to listen to the exclusive interview on the Praise ATL website.

Bishop T.D. Jakes: God Calls Rejects & Freaks

Bishop T.D. Jakes, lead pastor of The Potter’s House, preached as a guest speaker at the Houston megachurch belonging to Pastor Joel Osteen over the weekend.

Jakes delivered the sermon for all three English services at Lakewood Church, once on Saturday and twice Sunday morning.

The prominent evangelist is well known in the Christian community for his fiery preaching and has been invited several times to pray with President Obama, most recently at the Easter Prayer breakfast in April.

At the 8:30 a.m. service at Lakewood Sunday, Bishop Jakes took a few moments to praise his friend Osteen before delving into the message.

Osteen is a “person of integrity, honor” and “has the charisma,” said Jakes. “He really does. You should be proud to be here.”

Jakes then delivered a message on John 4:5-15, the biblical passage about Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman, to speak about the spiritual thirst that is rampant among today’s generation.

“The one thing about thirst is that it carries no sign … it does not announce itself,” the Dallas pastor said.

“You can’t tell who is thirsty. It is an inner craving. It is an inner need. It is something ticking inside of you. People around you will never know that you’re thirsty.” The Samaritan woman is extremely thirsty when she arrives at the well of Jacob where Jesus is sitting. Through her conversation with Jesus, readers learn that she is unable to satisfy her deep thirst despite going through five men and currently being involved with a sixth.

“The symptom of a thirsting soul … will make you go to person after person after person to fill the emptiness,” explained Jakes.

There was no one who could satisfy the Samaritan woman’s thirst until she met Jesus. He offers her water from his “well” and quenches her thirst. Jakes told the congregation that nothing else in the world will satisfy the “ravenous, craving” thirst of people other than the water offered through Christ.

“Religion doesn’t satisfy! It does not satisfy. It’s going to take relationship,” he said.

God knows a person’s thirst and exposes it.

During the message, Jakes shared his own testimony of being called by God at the age of 17. At that time, he thought God “has lost his mind” and doubted that anyone would believe God called someone who was crazy, weird and messed up.

For two years, Jakes said he ran in the opposite direction, visiting every club, smoking every joint and watching every little nasty, filthy thing. He couldn’t understand why God wouldn’t just call “one of them nice church people” who hadn’t committed the sins he had to do God’s work instead. Despite his attempts to brush God off, God still found him and pulled him out of his racy lifestyle.

“When God wants you, He will find you anywhere,” said Jakes. “He specializes in weirdos and rejects and freaks and messed-up deranged people.”

“Despite all your inabilities, God has a plan for your life.”

He concluded his sermon by urging dried-up Christians, back-sliding Christians, and those who have yet to know Christ to quench their unfulfilled spiritual thirst by coming to the well of living water.

Following Jake’s message, Osteen led his congregation and visitors in a prayer aloud to accept Jesus into their lives: “Lord Jesus, come into my heart, make me clean, I give you my life, I make you my Lord and Savior. Amen.”

Other than being the pastor of the 30,000 congregation at The Potter’s House, Jakes is also an accomplished Christian entertainment entrepreneur. The megachurch pastor is gaining attention for his latest movie “Jumping the Broom,” which has grossed over $34 million since its release in early May.

Gospel Star Karen Clark Sheard Flying High with Collaborations with Aretha Franklin and T.D. Jakes

Multi-talented award-winning contemporary gospel star Karen Clark Sheard (of the legendary Clark Sisters) is sparkling even brighter this year with an impressive number of high profile projects – in music as well as a major motion picture coup.

For starters, Sheard made gospel music history in January by becoming the FIRST artist honored with “The Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year Award” from the Stellar Awards. She was also nominated again for prestigious Grammy and Dove Awards this year. Pushing forward, Karen has also been nominated for this year’s “Best Gospel Artist” honors at the BET Awards that will be announced live on the network’s star-studded telecast on Sunday, June 26, 2011.

Next, she made a magical blend with Aretha Franklin on the roof raising duet “Faithful” on The Queen of Soul’s deeply personal and self-produced latest album, A Woman Falling Out of Love (on Aretha Records) in-stores NOW. Thoroughly impressed, The Queen tapped Sheard for a role in the long-awaited Franklin biopic slated to begin production this fall.

In related film news, Sheard also graces T.D. Jakes’ Presents Sacred Love Songs 2: Music Inspired By The Movie “Jumping the Broom” (the hit African American family film with a message that stars Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Paula Patton, Valarie Pettiford and others). For the newly released album, Sheard and gospel-jazz saxophone great Kirk Whalum lend their incomparable styles to Natalie Cole’s 1975 hit “Inseparable.”

Finally, Karen’s sixth and latest album All in One – her first in four years released last April on Karew Records label (her joint venture with husband Bishop J. Drew Sheard, distributed by EMI Gospel) – is still going strong with styles that range from traditional to urban contemporary – something for everybody. Bishop Eddie Long Addresses Church After Lawsuit Settlement: Sources Put Settlement at $15 Million

Bishop Eddie Long delivered his first Sunday sermon at his Atlanta megachurch since he reached a settlement out of court in the sexual misconduct case.  Multiple media outlets are reporting out of Atlanta that the settlement was $15 million dollars split between the four accusers.  At New Birth the crowd still cheered for Bishop Eddie Long as he took the pulpit Sunday, but gone was the air of defiance that defined his appearance eight months ago when he rallied his congregation to battle amid lawsuits accusing the megachurch pastor of sexual misconduct.

Just days after settling the lawsuits filed by four young men who used to attend New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, the message was one of progress and prosperity to the several hundred gathered. The choir opened the two-hour 8 a.m. service with the gospel hymn “Moving Forward,” which began: “I’m not going back, I’m moving ahead. Here to declare to you my past is over.”

Long addressed a far smaller group than the one gathered back in September, when he compared himself to the Bible’s ultimate underdog and vowed to fight like David versus Goliath against accusations that he abused his spiritual authority and coerced four young men into sexual relationships with gifts including cars, cash and travel. Then, thousands of supporters and observers packed the 10,000-seat sanctuary, which took on the atmosphere of an arena.

After Sunday’s opening hymn, the service was decidedly focused on the church, not its controversial leader. For months, the scandal tainted Long’s reputation as an influential spiritual leader who transformed his suburban Atlanta congregation of 150 into a following of 25,000 members and an international televangelist empire that included athletes, entertainers and politicians.

Long did not address the allegations or the settlement from the pulpit. Details of the resolution have not been disclosed.

In a statement released last week, New Birth seemed eager to begin a new chapter.

“This decision was made to bring closure to this matter and to allow us to move forward with the plans God has for this ministry,” the statement read.

Goldie Taylor, a social commentator on African-American issues who lives near the church, said the subdued atmosphere came as no surprise to her.

“He has fractured a body of Christ,” she said. “He continues to lead what is a declining congregation. I think he owes it to them to participate, if he can, in their healing. Whether he can or not is really up to his congregation. Leading sometimes means walking away.”

Long, who has been a vocal opponent of gay marriage, built his empire with charisma and a prosperity Gospel message that told followers God would reward the faithful with wealth. It was an idea he embodied, sporting jewels on stage, living in a mansion and driving a luxury car.

The bishop was well-regarded in Lithonia, just outside Atlanta in DeKalb County, home to one of the most affluent African-American communities in the U.S. His presence at the church projected an image of strength and fatherhood.

Given that reputation, the out-of-court resolution comes as no surprise. Long likely wanted to avoid a trial that could have kept him in the spotlight, said Jessica Gabel, a Georgia State University law professor who specializes in trial strategy.

“Nobody wants their dirty laundry aired in court,” she said. “Every day there would be fanfare. This is not something you want in the media.”

Gabel said that attorneys try to keep the terms of any agreement confidential, but that it’s noteworthy that Long was not required to apologize or acknowledge any wrongdoing.

The case has not been investigated criminally because Georgia’s age of consent is 16. The young men were 17 and 18 when the alleged sexual contact occurred.

The agreement also holds advantages for the plaintiffs. J. Tom Morgan, a former DeKalb County district attorney, said men tend to be particularly reluctant to take the stand in such cases – which they would have likely been required to do if it had gone to court later this year.

“I’m sure they wanted to settle if the defense offered a reasonable sum of money,” he said.

Taylor said it is Long’s flock that is paying for whatever transgressions may have occurred.

“If it’s a dollar or $15 million, it is coming from the community that supports that institution,” said Taylor. “Those community stakeholders deserve to see you prove your innocence. By and large, people are interpreting this decision to settle as guilt.”
