Daughter of MLK Dies

Yolanda Denise King, daughter and eldest child of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has died, said Steve Klein, a spokesman for the King Center.

King died late Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., at age 51. Klein said the family did not know the cause of death but that relatives think it might have been a heart problem.

The actor, speaker and producer was the founder and head of Higher Ground Productions, billed as a "gateway for inner peace, unity and global transformation." On her company's Web site, King described her mission as encouraging personal growth and positive social change.

King was also an author and advocate for peace and nonviolence, and held memberships in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference — which her father co-founded in 1957 — and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Her death comes little more than a year after the death of her mother, Coretta Scott King.

She appeared in numerous films and played Rosa Parks in the 1978 miniseries King. She also appeared in Ghosts of Mississippi and founded a production company called Higher Ground Productions.

Born in 1955 in Montgomery, Ala., King was just an infant when her home was bombed during the turbulent civil rights era.

She was the most visible and outspoken among the Kings' four children during activities honoring this year's Martin Luther King Day in January, the first since Coretta Scott King's death.

At her father's former Atlanta church, Ebenezer Baptist, she performed a series of one-actor skits on King Day this year that told stories including a girl's first ride on a desegregated bus and a college student's recollection of the 1963 desegregation of Birmingham, Ala.

She also urged the audience at Ebenezer to be a force for peace and love, and to use the King holiday each year to ask tough questions about their own beliefs on prejudice.

"We must keep reaching across the table and, in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, feed each other," King said.

When asked then by The Associated Press how she was dealing with the loss of her mother, King responded: "I connected with her spirit so strongly. I am in direct contact with her spirit, and that has given me so much peace and so much strength."

A flag at The King Center, which King's mother founded in 1968 and where she was a board member, was lowered to half-staff on Wednesday.

Yolanda King is survived by her sister, the Rev. Bernice A. King; two brothers, Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King; and an extended family.

Arrangements were to be announced later, the family said in a statement.

Rev. Jerry Falwell Dies at 73

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who died Tuesday at the age of 73, was a powerful and polarizing figure in both the religious and political arenas.

It was Jerry who led an entire wing of Christianity — the fundamentalist wing — away from isolation and into a direct confrontation with the culture. In the late 1970s, he began making it respectable for Christian pastors to talk from the pulpit about the evil of abortion, simply because he did so on his television program and in his printed communications. Until he led the way, the common response from conservative pastors was to say that abortion is a matter best left to a woman and her doctor.

Jerry also led the conservative church in grassroots organizing by starting the Moral Majority in 1979, as a means of putting wheels on his deeply held beliefs. The organization was key to Ronald Reagan winning the White House in 1980, and the Moral Majority suddenly came to the attention of the national press corps.

Because Jerry and his Moral Majority were the first ones out of the trenches in the culture war, they got shot at repeatedly by the national media and by liberal church leaders. But he always weathered the onslaught, permanently stamping the conservative American church with respectability on social action.

It was my honor to share the front lines with him in the battle for righteousness in our nation. We will continue that fight, in his honor, until our mutual goals are achieved."

Below are reactions to Falwell's death from religious and political leaders.

President Bush

Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of Jerry Falwell, a man who cherished faith, family, and freedom. As the founder of the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerry lived a life of faith and called upon men and women of all backgrounds to believe in God and serve their communities. One of his lasting contributions was the establishment of Liberty University, where he taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God's word throughout each stage of their lives.

Today, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Macel, and the rest of the Falwell family.

Hustler Magazine Founder Larry Flynt — Falwell brought a landmark libel case against Flynt

"My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. … I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling."

The Rev. Al Sharpton:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. Jerry Falwell. Though he and I debated much and disagreed often, we shared a very cordial and warm friendship. I visited him in Lynchburg, dined with him, and even talked with him during personal crises. Though we were as politically opposite as two people could be, I truly respected his commitment to his beliefs and our mutual belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As I stated to my nationally syndicated radio show, I pray for the Falwell family and join the nation in mourning the passing of this religious leader."

The Rev. Billy Graham:

"Jerry Falwell was a close personal friend for many years. We did not always agree on everything, but I knew him to be a man of God. His accomplishments went beyond most clergy of his generation. Some of my grandchildren have attended, and are attending, Liberty University. He leaves a gigantic vacuum in the evangelical world.

I am praying for his family, and especially the university that he headed."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

"We regret his passing. He's certainly been a prominent figure in American religion and politics for the last 20 years. And I know he'll be greatly, greatly missed."

Former Sen. Fred D. Thompson

"America has lost a man of great faith, and a leader dedicated to defending the rights of all Americans to express their faith in the public square. Jeri and I wish to extend out deepest condolences to the Falwell family, and we will keep them in our prayers."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"I never met Rev. Falwell. I'm certainly sorry about his death. I extend my condolences to his family and his parishioners and those people around the country who care so much about him."

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.:

"I join the students, faculty, and staff of Liberty University and Americans of all faiths in mourning the loss of Rev. Jerry Falwell.

"Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Falwell's family at this difficult time."

Christian evangelical leader and chairman of Focus on the Family, James Dobson

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Jerry's wife Macel, his children Jerry, Jonathan and Jeannie, and his church. This is a tragic loss for them — and for all Americans. Jerry's passions and convictions changed the course of our country for the better over the last 20 years — and I was proud to call him my friend.

ASCAP to Honor Mary J.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will honor Mary J. Blige during its 20th Anniversary Rhythm & Soul Music Awards on June 25, 2007, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. Blige will be presented with the ASCAP Voice of Music Award during the invitation-only event, which will also honor ASCAP's top songwriters and publishers of 2006.

The ASCAP Voice of Music Award is given to recognize artists and songwriters whose music illuminates people's lives through song. Previous recipients include Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Diane Warren and Jimmy Webb, among others.

"To many, Mary J. Blige is not only the 'Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,' but also a guiding light" said Marilyn Bergman, ASCAP President and Chairman. "Through all of her struggles, she was determined to find and maintain her own musical voice, and by doing so, she has become one of the most successful R&B/hip-hop writer/performers in the country and has paved the way for many others who have followed her path. The ASCAP Voice of Music Award is an honor that she richly deserves."

Continuing to dominate the charts with her album, The Breakthrough, which has sold over three million copies, Mary J. Blige is recognized as one of today's most successful R&B/hip-hop songwriter/performers. She bridged the gap between R&B and rap in a way that no female singer had before by combining modern R&B with an edgy rap sound coupled with subject matter drawn from the pain and grit of her childhood.

During her 15-year career, she has released seven chart-topping albums –What's the 411?, Share My World, Mary, My Life, No More Drama, Love & Life, and The Breakthrough – that have spawned several hit singles, including "Real Love," "You Remind Me," "Enough Cryin," "I Can Love You," "Not Gon' Cry," "Take Me As I Am," "Family Affair" and "Be Without You." A much-anticipated and long-awaited collection, Reflections – A Retrospective, was released in December 2006. The album not only gathers Blige's timeless greatest hits but also features four new songs, including the singles "We Ride (I See the Future)" and "Reflections (I Remember)."

She has won six GRAMMY Awards, including three at this year's 49th Annual GRAMMY Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song for "Be Without You" and Best R&B Album for The Breakthrough. She has also won several other industry accolades, including American Music Awards, BET Awards, Billboard Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards and Source Hip-Hop Music Awards, among many others. She received the "Heroes Award" in 1999 from the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy and the "Legend Award" in 2005 at the Vibe Awards. Most recently, Blige earned ASCAP's Pop Song of the Year Award for "Be Without You," which she co-wrote with Johntá Austin.

“Mary exemplifies everything that this award stands for,” said Jeanie Weems, ASCAP Senior Vice President, Membership Group – Rhythm & Soul. “Her songs have always reflected the way she lives her life, and in turn, it tells the truth about the way her fans live theirs. Her music has been the voice of inspiration to women worldwide in both struggle and triumph."

The 2007 ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards will also include a special presentation to ASCAP's Songwriter of the Year. Past recipients of this top honor include many of today's most celebrated talents, such as 50 Cent, Kandi Burruss, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Dr. Dre, Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Alicia Keys and Timbaland.

In addition to honoring the top songwriters and publishers of 2006, special awards will be presented in the following categories: Publisher of the Year, Top Soundtrack Song of the Year, Top Reggae Artist of the Year, Top Ringtone of the Year, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song, Top Rap Song and Top Gospel Song. The evening will also feature performances by several award-winning songwriter/performers.

Black Mega Church Turns 200

– Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III Leads the Kick-off of the Historic Bicentennial Celebration of The Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York – -New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg Proclaims May 15, 2007 Abyssinian Baptist Church Day –

May 15, 2007 (NEW YORK, NY) – Senator Hillary Clinton, Wynton Marsalis, Dr. Cornel West, Governor Eliot Spitzer, Congressman Charles Rangel, Angela Bassett and Courtney Vance are among the many dignitaries paying tribute to The Abyssinian Baptist Church for its 200th anniversary in November 2008. The bicentennial, Abyssinian 200: True to Our God, True to our Native Land, will be an 18-month celebration commemorating America’s first mega church and its remarkable spiritual, social and political contributions to the cultural landscape of America. Igniting a spirit of empowerment and appreciation of African-American culture, Abyssinian 200 will include a series of special events and first-ever collaborations – from a spiritual pilgrimage to Ethiopia and the premiere of an original commission mass by Wynton Marsalis, to the publication of a book documenting the impact of Abyssinian and black churches on America.

“Abyssinian 200 is a milestone that represents the continuous role of the African-American church as a galvanizing force in the building of beloved communities,” said Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, pastor of Abyssinian. “Through spiritual edification, social justice, political activism, and economic empowerment, The Abyssinian Baptist Church and all churches doing similar work have been sustained leaders of spiritual transformation in the context of real world issues. These issues include housing, education, culture and the arts, family tradition, and ownership of capital.”

Abyssinian will also partner with some of the country’s most influential historical and cultural institutions for Abyssinian 200. All will support the bicentennial by presenting and participating in lectures, exhibits, tours, youth-focused programs and other events throughout the celebration period.

Featured Abyssinian 200 celebration activities include:

•Ethiopia Pilgrimage: Abyssinian 200 will reach across borders with a pilgrimage to Ethiopia (the native land of Abyssinian’s founding fathers). Coinciding with Ethiopia’s millennium celebration, the journey will provide an opportunity to tour major attractions of the country as well as engage key Ethiopian officials in a cultural, socio-economic and educational dialogue.

•Jazz at Lincoln Center Performance: A first-time collaboration featuring the Jazz at
Lincoln Center Orchestra, Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III and a mass choir premiering Wynton Marsalis’ penned mass for Abyssinian 200.

•Theme Song: Legendary duo Ashford & Simpson will compose an original song in recognition of Abyssinian 200.

•Published Book: Dr. Maya Angelou and Dr. Cornel West will contribute to "WITNESS: Two Centuries of African American Faith and Practice at The Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, New York" – an exhaustive history of Abyssinian published by Wm B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. and co-authored by three independent scholars: Dr. Quinton H. Dixie, Professor of Philosophy, Indiana University-Purdue University; Dr. Genna Rae McNeil, Professor of History, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and Dr. Houston Roberson, Professor of History, Sewanee University of the South.

•Schomburg Center Exhibition: Tracing the significant role Abyssinian has played in the history of New York City, an exhibit will be mounted at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture – featuring artifacts, photographs and memorabilia from Abyssinian's own archive collection, including 19th & 20th century items of Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. & Jr.

•StoryCorps Oral-History Project: In celebration of the bicentennial, Abyssinian has partnered with StoryCorps, the national oral-history project (in partnership with the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture). Through this partnership, the many stories of Abyssinian will be documented and preserved for generations to come.

•White-Tie Gala: A formal banquet in New York City. Invitees include a number of elected officials, dignitaries and other celebrities in recognition of Abyssinian’s significance to the global community.

•Black-Tie Gala: Abyssinian marks the bicentennial with a formal black-tie and auction in New York City for the Abyssinian congregation and community supporters.

The celebration will also include a CD featuring the Abyssinian Choir and special guests performing live, new music, as well as the unveiling of a specially commissioned abstract painting titled “Til Now We Stand at Last” by Harlem artist Dianne Smith and inspired by Abyssinian 200.

“I am blessed to be a part of this historic celebration of 200 years of love and service enacted by the great Abyssinian Baptist Church,” said Dr. Cornel West, Professor of Religion and African-American Studies at Princeton University. “This church represents the best of the human spirit and the spiritual strivings of a dignified and determined black people.”

An abortion procedure banned

A landmark decision by the Supreme Court announced Wednesday upholds a nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure.

Pro-life advocates are hailing the 5-to-4 ruling that a ban on partial birth abortion does not violate a woman's constitutional right to choose.

"It's been a long time coming, and make no mistake about it, this decision is the beginning of the end of Roe. V. Wade, and it's the start of a new era for the respect of our God given right to life," said Rev. Robert Schenk of Faith and Action.

Pro-choice groups are calling this legal defeat a dangerous rollback in women's rights.
"We are going to see a whole new onslaught on restrictions on abortions coming out of this decision," said Nancy Northup of the Center for Reproductive Rights.

The Partial Birth Abortion Act signed by President Bush in 2003 outlaws the procedure critics call infanticide.

Clinically called "dilation and extraction," it is performed in the second and third trimesters.
The surgeon uses forceps to pull a fetus out of the birth canal, partially delivering the body up to the head.

Scissors are then forced into the base of the skull to make an opening and a suction catheter is inserted to evacuate the contents, before removing the fetus from the patient.
The narrow decision reveals a shift in the court's direction.

Liberal justices were pitted against conservatives, with the majority hinging on Bush appointees Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy voiced concern over patients not getting information on "the way the fetus is killed."

He wrote " medical profession… may find different and less shocking methods to abort the fetus in the second trimester."

Writing in the minority, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg called the decision "alarming , " saying it "applauds federal intervention to ban a procedure found necessary in certain cases."

Republican presidential candidates overwhelmingly support the ruling with Mitt Romney saying it "reaffirmed the value of life. by upholding a ban on a practice that offends basic human decency."

Sen. John McCain also weighed in calling "Partial birth. one of the most odious aspects of abortion."

But Democratic frontrunners were sharply critical.

It's "a dramatic departure from four decades of Supreme Court rulings that upheld a woman's right to choose." said Senator Hillary Clinton.

Senator Barack Obama was concerned it would "embolden state legislatures to enact further measures to restrict a woman's right to choose, and that the conservative Supreme Court justices will look for other opportunities to erode Roe v. Wade."
Bush praised the decision saying he would "continue to work for the day when every child is welcomed in life and protected in law."

The high court's decision only highlights the significance of presidential appointments to the bench, and the significance of the 2008 election in a highly-charged debate over the 'right of a woman to control her own body' versus the 'right to life of the unborn.'
