James Fortune Tops Billboard #1 On Top Gospel Chart with New Album ‘Identity’

James Fortune hits big with his new album, IDENTITY, which landed in the top spot on three Billboard charts this week: Gospel, Gospel & Christian (combined) and Independent Albums.

The album also earned its way to the Top 10 position on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, at Number 7 all following a weeklong promotional tour in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, New York and his hometown, Houston.

Released via Fortune’s new label deal with eOne/Light Records under the imprint, F.I.Y.A. WORLD MUSIC, IDENTITY marks the artists best first week sales to date and highest chart position. This also marks Light Records’ third number one album with previous chart toppers including William McDowelll’s ARISE and Jessica Reedy’s FROM THE HEART which are still in the Top 15.

The inspirational single “Still Able,” is currently Number 2 on Billboard Gospel singles chart. He will continue to promote the album with upcoming appearances and performances on BET.com and SiriusXM Praise. Additionally, Fortune & F.I.Y.A. performed their follow up single “Never Again,” on the 2012 Stellar Awards. The Stellar Awards are set to air in national syndication this week and will air on cable on GMC (Gospel Music Channel) on Saturday, February 11th.

IDENTITY Fortune’s third album is a powerful collection of 15 soul-stirring songs of encouragement, hope and healing that speaks into the hearts of the religious and agnostic alike. A dynamic songwriter, producer and arranger, Fortune delivered a timely message that has clearly connected with a wide audience.

Showing a special gift for pairing the right vocalist for the right songs, Fortune collected a set of notable guest artists on IDENTITY such as famed R&B songbird Monica and Fred Hammond on “Hold On,” a beautiful rhythmic flavored groove; Nikki Ross on the upbeat “Make A Sound,” and the phenomenal “With You,” featuring the dynamic vocal aerobics of Kim Burrell. Another gem, “It Could Be Worse,” which is one of the CD’s most powerful songs, features the talents of Leandria Johnson & Zacardi Cortez.

In 2005, Fortune & F.I.Y.A. set the world ablaze with their breakthrough debut album YOU SURVIVED and lead single, of the same name, which peaked at #2 on the R&B Gospel singles chart, and garnered him the ASCAP Writer’s Award for Gospel Song of the Year in 2006. He amassed worldwide recognition in 2009 with the award winning emotionally charged song “I Trust You” off of the sophomore release THE TRANSFORMATION. “I Trust You” held the number one slot on the Gospel National Airplay chart for an astounding 30 weeks, making history by becoming the longest running #1 single for any genre.

Fortune continued amassing accolades with subsequent success with the soaring single “I Believe,” which garnered him his second ASCAP Writer’s Award and a Soul Train nomination for “Best Gospel Performance” in 2011. Fortune has also received an impressive three Stellar Award nominations for “Contemporary CD of the Year,” “Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year” and “Group/Duo of the Year.”

IDENTITY is available on line & in stores now.  CLICK HERE to watch Fortune’s latest music video for “Still Able”

TD Jakes’ New Movie “Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day” Trailer Released: New Movie Stars Blair Underwood

The trailer for Bishop T.D. Jakes’ upcoming film, “Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day” was recently released online and offers viewers a preview of a highly emotional tale of suspense and spirituality.

Jakes’ film adaptation of the self-help novel he authored takes viewers through a plethora of emotions. The movie trailer begins with Blair Underwood playing with his 6-year-old daughter, whom actress Sharon Leal discovers is missing only a few short moments into the trailer’s progression.

Underwood, who plays father and husband David Ames to Leal’s character, Kari, is seen going through emotional anguish due to marital issues and the apparent abduction of his daughter. Leal is also emotionally charged in search of her daughter, whom the couple believes was taken by a serial killer who murders his victims seven days after capturing them.

The words “lies,” “deception,” and “murder” flash on the screen, leaving the audience in suspense, with quick cuts to other scenes that bring attention to Kari’s possible extramarital affair.

The film will be the first under a multi-year partnership deal between AMC Theaters and Codeblack Entertainment, a new media and film company marketing to urban audiences. The deal secures Codeblack’s releases to play exclusively in specific AMC locations.

Nikkole Denson-Randolph, vice president of Specialty and Alternative Content of AMC Theaters, said the partnership will be great exposure for the upcoming film.

“The partnership with Codeblack will bring needed exposure to films like ‘Woman Thou Art Loosed!: On The 7th Day’ that reach a key demographic among our guests,” said Denson-Randolph in an AMC press release. “We look forward to expanding on this already successful collaboration.”

The film’s stars include Blair Underwood, Leal, Pam Grier and Nicole Beharie and was directed by Emmy Award winner Neema Barnette. “Woman Thou Art Loosed” will be the second film release inspired by Jakes’ self-help series, after a 2004 adaptation of his works.

“Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day” is scheduled for an April 13th release.

Kee, Donnie McClurkin, Deitrick Haddon, Lisa McClendon, Marvin Sapp, just to name a few and made much noise as the winner of KATZ Hallelujah 1600’s Praise Alive

Cheneta has garnered much wisdom from her musical experiences with many great gospel artists and has incorporated it into her own music style. Now, as a solo artist with Real Talent Media Group, the world will experience the anointed and fresh sound of Ms. Cheneta Jones, on her upcoming 2012 release, Transformed.

“My Everything”, an inspiring and pure ballad, penned and produced by the award winning Percy Bady has received rave reviews and much love at radio.

Jones’ current radio single “Be Like You” speaks directly to God, in awe of who He is, with a desire to be all that He is. You get the hot new DVD of the gospel stage play, “Church Girl,” that hits retail shelves everywhere on January 31, 2012.

The musical film follows the life of Emily Franklin, a preacher’s daughter who gets caught up in a fast life that takes her away from the principles she was raised with as a child. It stars actress Robin Givens, singer A’ngela Winbush, Demetria McKinney from the sitcom “House of Payne”, Sean Blakemore, Grammy winner Karen Clark Sheard, songstress Wanda Nero-Butler and Tony Grant from the R&B group, Az Yet.

Douglas has been a leader in the Gospel Music industry for more than 15 years and is known as the new artist breaker. Through his grass-roots marketing techniques, he has broken some of today’s top Gospel artists like James Fortune, Earnest Pugh, Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson, Jimmy Hicks and Evelyn Turrentine-Agee.

As a pioneer of Urban Theatre, Angela Barrow Dunlap has been writing and producing hit gospel stage plays for over 25 years. “We literally had to invent this genre,” Dunlap reminisces. “There was no training or classes for this type of theatre. We had to invent and learn all at the same time.” Over the years, she’s co-created hit plays such as “Why Do Good Girls Like Bad Boyz”, “If These Hips Could Talk” and “Real Men Pray”. Her latest, “Church Girl,” toured the USA in 2011.

Recently, Douglas introduced The New Deal Entertainment University as a platform to teach the urban world his unique brand of multi-media marketing that has helped him place James Fortune and Earnest Pugh at the top of the Billboard gospel charts. “I want to teach industry professionals not just by passing on text-book and/or online courses, but I want to also practice what I preach by walking-the-walk,” Douglas states. “It’s not just enough to promote records, but you have to cross promote in television and film.

Teaming up with Angela Dunlap to bring `Church Girl’ to DVD and Home Theater is the perfect launch for Blacksmoke Films.”

‘Sunday Best’ Runner-Up Andrea Helms Signs with Music World Gospel: New CD Due out in March

Andrea Helms is a lifelong singer and worshipper. She brought the best of her talent and spirit to every performance as a contestant on Season 4 of BET’s Sunday Best, the world’s leading gospel competition television show. It took her to the show’s finale, where she was first- runner up. Now she’s bringing her best to her debut CD as a Music World Gospel recording artist. Moving Forward, which features songs she performed on Sunday Best, will be released in stores and online everywhere on March 6, 2012.

Andrea thought about auditioning for Sunday Best for two years before the opportunity presented itself. “We just kept missing it. We would always catch the show during the tryout episodes and we wondered where you go to audition,” says Andrea. “I received a call from a friend who said they were going to be auditioning in Dallas and that I needed to go. Suddenly I started second-guessing myself and I almost didn’t go. But I showed up, and I was among thousands of people. I thought it would be a good learning experience. I didn’t really expect to make it as far as I did. I was surprised.”

Andrea believes that she came out of the Sunday Best experience stronger and more confident than when she went in. “It’s very taxing because not only are you singing for Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Kim Burrell—all these major artists—but you’re on national television,” she recalls. “You have to dig down deep into who you are and try to stay true to who you are, knowing that the only source that you have is God.”

Andrea felt it was especially intimidating to put her own stamp on songs made popular by outstanding singers such as Tremaine Hawkins and Whitney Houston, whose musicianship she most admires, along with Mariah Carey and Martha Munizzi. There is no doubt that she has successfully put her stamp on the seven songs on the CD. She offers a powerful, soulful and bluesy turn on Sunday Best judges Mary Mary’s song, “Yesterday,” which is her first single from the CD. Her version of Richard Smallwood’s classic “I Love the Lord” is uniquely her own. She also puts her own spin on the highly popular praise and worship song, “Because Of Who You Are,” written by Martha and Daniel Munizzi, as well as on Donald Lawrence’s songs “The Heaven Are Telling (A Mighty God We Serve) and “Encourage Yourself. And as an iTunes exclusive only, she presents a worshipful take on “Wind Beneath My Wings,” written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar (this song will not be on the CD project).

One of the most talked about moments of the season was when Amber Bullock and Andrea Helms performed a duet, “Moving Forward,” penned by Ricardo Sanchez during the show’s finale. Andrea and Amber offer a powerful rendition of that song for this CD.

Andrea is especially drawn to the song, “Change,” on the CD because of her personal story. The recording includes some of her testimony. “From the time that my mother was carrying me, doctors told her that I would be a vegetable and that I would never talk or walk, but I was born a healthy 8 pound 2 ounce baby,” she said. “God performed a miracle. I wasn’t even supposed to be able to talk, and He gave me the ability to sing. Then, years later, when I had my son, I dealt with severe postpartum depression that literally caused me to have suicidal tendencies. I was still leading worship through it all, but it was really a rough, rough, time. I don’t remember a lot of my son’s first year being here with me because I was not in the right frame of mind. My mom is a fireball and a prayer warrior and she prayed me through it. I think God leads us through places like that so that we can minister to other people. Now I walk my victory out every day and I can speak to women and understand where they are coming from. So God has really changed me and that’s why that song means something to me.”

The CD was recorded at Music World Studios, which Andrea described as an “amazing place with a great staff.” The songs were produced by H. Doobie Powell for Chip Off The Block Productions, who Andrea describes as “a genius.”

Born in Odessa Texas, Andrea was an only child and the daughter of a preacher who was also an accomplished musician. Music was always a part of her life at home, at school, and at Friendship Church in Denton, Texas, where her father was pastor.

While in high school she won a position in the Texas All State Choir for three consecutive years, being named first chair soprano two of those years. Her junior year earned her first place in NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition, which encompassed the southern United States. Her senior year she won the Young Artist Competition, receiving a cash prize and the opportunity to solo with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra.

When she graduated from high school in 1992, she became minister of music at Friendship Church, where she led worship and directed the adult and children’s choirs and the band. She remained there until 1998.

Andrea met her husband, Michael, at Friendship Church when his family came there when she was 13 and he was 15. “From the time we first saw each other, we knew we were supposed to be together,” she said. They started dating when she was 15, and later Michael worked for the church in the outreach ministry and eventually became youth pastor. Andrea and Michael were married in 1993. In 1998 they were called to pastor another church and they left Friendship. After her father’s death, Andrea and Michael returned to Denton to co-pastor the church, where Andrea has resumed her role as minister of music.

Andrea describes her church as “a place that meets almost every need.” A nondenominational church with an interracial congregation between 300 and 500 people, it serves young and old and ministers to “anyone who comes to the door.”

Besides completing her CD, Andrea has been traveling around the country to minister in song. She recently was featured in the Jacksonville, Florida run of T.J. Hemphill’s play, Perilous Times II, with Music World label mate Le’Andria Johnson, Season 3 winner of Sunday Best. Andrea also has been asked by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s family to sing at his birthday celebration in Atlanta in January 2012. “This is probably the greatest honor that I’ve had in my entire life,” she said of the invitation.

Andrea is looking forward to what comes next as a result of Sunday Best and the CD. “When you start walking through the doors that God opens, you never know what’s behind that door,” she said. “I really would like to have a platform for my husband and me to share our ministry with the world. I want people to know who we are together and so I’m anxious to see what becomes of that.”

Her greatest goal, however, is to use her music to connect people with Jesus. “I want people to know how big Jesus is through what I sing,” she says. “I want them to know that he is real and that you don’t have to be cleaned up to come to Jesus, you can come as you are. And if that’s accomplished, then my mission is complete.”
