Rev. Al Sharpton wants Justice for Trayvon Martin: Heads to Florida to Protest

The case of a 17 year black boy who was gunned-down holding candy and ice-tea is causing up-rage in the black community and is receiving wide-spread coverage in the national media.  Trayvon Martin lost his life for apparently ‘looking suspicious’ to neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman.

Rev. Al Sharpton sees the importance of this case and is heading to Florida to stage a rally.  “I wait for an era when young black men will no longer have to live in fear. Decades after the abolishment of slavery, we were haunted by the reality of being hunted down, beaten and lynched by both everyday citizens and law enforcement,” says Sharpton. The following statements were also expressed by the activist.  Young boys like Emmett Till were openly and viciously murdered because of the sentiments of bigoted individuals who believed they had the right to carry out their own brand of injustice.

Today, black (and Latino youth as well) are routinely targeted, profiled and ‘mistakenly’ shot by those sworn to serve and protect us (i.e. Sean Bell).

And now, in what can only be described as the most blatant form of vigilante murder, a 17-year-old named Trayvon Martin loses his life at the hands of a self-proclaimed ‘crime stopper’. But the only crime here is that this killer ended poor Trayvon’s life under the guise of his own preconceptions and has not been charged, nor arrested. We will head to Florida to ensure that all that changes immediately.

On Thursday, March 22 at 7 PM, National Action Network (NAN) and I will convene an urgent rally at the First Shiloh Baptist Church in Sanford, FL. to demand justice for Trayvon Martin. We will be joined by community leaders and concerned citizens, from all ethnicities, backgrounds and walks of life, who cannot even begin to comprehend this nightmarish situation.

A young teenager walking home, armed only with candy and a drink, should never lose his/her life because someone in a gated community feels “threatened.”

George Zimmerman, the accused adult shooter, is roaming the earth freely while Trayvon’s mother, father and family members must bury their precious child.

It is an atrocious miscarriage of justice, and we demand that authorities in Florida arrest Zimmerman immediately and charge him for the crime of murder. Anyone with sound reasoning cannot disagree.

In 2005, the state of Florida enacted one of the toughest ‘stand your ground’ self-defense laws which allowed civilians to use deadly force against ‘intruders’ or anyone they believed was a ‘threat’ to their life. Supported — and in many ways lobbied — by the National Rifle Association, these laws don’t even require a person to retreat from the situation, thereby allowing them to pursue someone who “threatens” them.

The legislation not only protects individuals from prosecution, but goes so far as barring them from civil suits in many cases as well. As the model for dozens of other states that now carry similar laws, the Florida self-defense rule creates an environment where anyone, at any moment, can claim they were fearful of someone as a justification for cold-blooded murder. And that’s exactly what we see here in the tragic case of Trayvon Martin.

In the recently released 911 tapes of that fateful day, Zimmerman was clearly told to stand down by authorities, but he didn’t comply. Many eyewitnesses said they heard screams of help, but no one came to Trayvon’s assistance in time to save his life. Zimmerman claimed he had spotted a ‘suspicious’ individual, and, as several news outlets have reported, he pursued Trayvon, not the other way around.

In a society that still views young men of color as threatening, dangerous and suspicious without cause, these self-defense laws in Florida and elsewhere give free range for anyone to openly kill those that they may not like or those that make them feel uncomfortable because of their own inherent prejudices. And the race/ethnicity of Zimmerman or any citizen in this type of scenario doesn’t matter, because at the end of the day, it is the race of the victim — Trayvon — that does matter. It is his race and his demographic that is consistently depicted as the threat and negatively portrayed in popular culture.

A few years ago, a man in Oklahoma City shot and killed a 16-year-old who allegedly tried to rob the drugstore where he worked. This pharmacist attempted to plea self-defense, but because he shot the teenager in the head, chased someone else out and returned to shoot the kid five more times as he lay the floor, he was sentenced to first-degree murder.

Young Trayvon’s only crime was buying a pack of Skittles and walking through the wrong neighborhood. He had his entire life ahead of him, and we demand justice without delay. Zimmerman must be held accountable.

Join us in Sanford on Thursday as we call for a repeal to Florida’s outrageous self-defense laws. It’s about Trayvon’s life, not supposed self-defense.

I’m still waiting for the day that young black men (and women) can walk freely in any neighborhood without fearing for their lives.

Gospel Singer Marvin Sapp signs book deal for ‘I Win’

Gospel singer, pastor and producer Marvin Sapp will soon be adding “author” to his resume.

Sapp, pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church on Burton Street SE, said he has signed an initial agreement with Destiny Image Publishers that he hopes will bring a book to store shelves before the end of the year.

“It could be fairly quick because the book is finished,” said Sapp of his prospective title “I Win,” also the name of his forthcoming CD.

“It’s not autobiographical, but it’s about how I made it through certain situations in my life and examples of things people can do to be successful in life and relationships and in leaving a legacy,” he said.

Sapp, 45, lost his wife and the mother of their three children, MaLinda Prince Sapp, to cancer in September 2010. His latest music and the book reflect the experience.

Destiny Images is a Pennsylvania-based publisher of faith-based books whose authors include well known Christian pastors and speakers such as T.D. Jakes, of Dallas, Texas, and Dr. Myles Monroe of Nassau, Bahamas.

“I was honestly considering self-publishing until I received a call from Destiny Image that they were interested,” said Sapp, who said a long term, multiple book publishing agreement is now being prepared.

Sapp said he’s been doing “listening parties” and other appearances in connection with his CD, “I Win,” which hits stores April 3. He was speaking from Tampa, Fla. where he was about to leave on a weeklong gospel cruise as a performing artist. Gospel singers Fred Hammond and Kierra Sheared are among the other artists on board.

Sapp’s first single (“My Testimony’) from the album is up to No. 6 on the Billboard gospel song chart – still with “greatest gainer” status.

JONNY DIAZ’S SINGLE “SCARS” IMPACTING LISTENERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Fair Trade Services artist and storyteller Jonny Diaz continues to impact the music listener with his powerful lyrics and heartfelt songs. With his brand new radio single “Scars,” the song follows Diaz’s other well-known radio hits such as “Break My Heart” and “Beauty of the Cross,” as well as his 2010 top hit “More Beautiful You.”

The important message of “Scars” is poignant during this Easter season, yet it’s also a song that Diaz will surely be playing for years to come. Be sure to to listen to the song below, and to watch Diaz share the message behind the writing of “Scars” here.

The single, which is being added to stations across the country, is obtaining new adds weekly and already receiving an overwhelming response from fans and radio stations of how it has deeply impacted them.

Greg Cassidy, Music Director/Morning Show Host from JOY-FM in St. Louis, shares, “From the first time I heard ‘Scars,’ I really felt it was a song that would connect with our community. We all have scars – though they are different scars for different people. We’ve all been in that place. Whatever you’re are suffering through, ‘Scars’ is a reminder that Jesus’ scars cover ours! So powerful. While it may be top of mind this Easter season, it is a theme that is timeless. Great writing from Jonny D!”

After fans have recently seen Diaz in concert performing the song, numerous comments have been rolling in. From “breathtaking” to “loving it,” a fan also posted, “Thank you so much for playing ‘Scars.’ I really believe it’s why I was there (at the show) tonight.” Another fan wrote, “Scars is your best song yet! Oh my goodness it is amazing!!”

“Scars”
written by Jonny Diaz

She holds for dear life to the ends of the sleeves in her hands
Covering up lies that she wrote with a razor sharp pen
And the sting of the blade is no match for the pain
of the loneliness that she’s going through, but we’ve all been there too

Praise God, we don’t have to hide scars
They just strengthen our wounds and they soften our hearts
They remind us of where we have been
But not who we are
So praise God, praise God we don’t have to hide scars

You can still see the mark on his hand
Where there once was a ring
He watched decades of history dissolve when she wanted to leave
And the hole that it left there
Inside of his chest is a canyon a thousand miles deep
We all know how that feels

Praise God we don’t have to hide scars
They just strengthen our wounds, and they soften our hearts
They remind us that where we have been
But not who we are
So praise God, praise God we don’t have to hide scars

There once was a king who so burdened with grief
Walked into death so that we could find peace
He rose up with scars on His hands and His feet
by them we are healed, by them we are healed

So praise God we don’t have to hide scars
Yeah we know his are covering ours
Praise God we don’t have to hide scars
They just strengthen our wounds and they soften our hearts
They remind us of where we have been But not who we are
So praise God, praise God
Oh, praise God, praise God, praise God we don’t have to hide scars

DANTE WESLEY ATTRIBUTES LONG NFL PRO CAREER TO FAITH AND FITNESS

In the nearly ten years that he has played in the National Football League, Dante Wesley has leaned on his faith and his health to allow him to survive a game that most men only dream of playing.

“It has been a blessing to be in the league as long as I have,” said Wesley, a graduate of the University of Arkansas/Pine Bluff, who was drafted in the 4th round by the Carolina Panthers in 2002.

“There were plenty of guys who were better ball players than me when I was in college,” said Wesley, who attends the Abundant Life Church of God In Christ with his wife, Renetta, and their two small children. “I asked God to wrap his arms around me and allow me to do His will. I knew that I would be successful if I followed what the Lord laid on my heart.”

Wesley, a resident of Cedar Hill, Texas works out each morning for nearly three hours during the off- season and believes he can play at least three additional years in the NFL. “But when my playing career is over, I want to work with young people, and I want to devote a large part of my life showing people how they can live fruitful and healthy lives.” When Dante and Renetta are not at home with their two children, Skylar, 6 and Dante who is 5, they can be found either in church or at a healthcare exhibit where Dante markets children supplements to people who come to his booth, particularly after seeing a picture of him in full NFL gear.

“Most people are not giving their children a healthy diet,” said Dante, whose children eat a daily regimen of food supplements called ‘Manna Bears.’ “We want our children to have a full and adequate complement of fruits and vegetables,” said Renetta. It is good for their growth and their socialization. We have seen the benefits in our own children and we want to share our experience with others.”

“My late mother was a nurse,” Dante said. “She instilled in me the importance of eating right and taking care of my body. Unfortunately, the nutrients that we need are not in the foods that we purchase in the supermarkets. That is why Renetta and I are so big on supplementation. In fact, in the NFL you will find many, many players who are looking for food based health supplements that will give them an edge, a boost, a decided advantage.”

“Our children and their health, and our own health are very important to us, said Renetta, who, like her husband, is a native of Arkansas. “ My mother and father were very strict when I was being raised. They wanted the very best for me and my sisters, and that is what we want for our children.”

“It is always important to have a plan for your life,” said Dante, “In the NFL those who are successful are always planning and always thinking. Planning and a sense of faith have always been at the center of my life. When I walk on the field to play, I pray that the same God who gave me life will protect me, and protect others who I am playing with and against.”
