Rodney King Dead: Face of LA Riots Dies at Age 47

Rodney King, the man who was at the center of the infamous Los Angeles riots, was found dead Sunday morning. He was 47. Our sources tell us that King’s fiancée, Cynthia Kelly, found him dead at the bottom of a swimming pool.

King recently marked the twentieth anniversary of the Los Angeles riots — the mayhem that took place after four police officers were acquitted of beating King in 1991. The beating, which was caught on camera, sparked national outrage and put King at the center of heated debate about the state of race relations in America.

CBS Los Angeles has released a radio interview with Rialto, California police Captain Randy De Anda, who says that King may have had some verbal contact with his fiancée, at which time she went outside and found him at the bottom of the pool.

“Rialto police officers responded to the location and removed him from inside of the pool and began CPR. The Rialto Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Mr. King to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. this morning,” De Anda said.

Preliminary information showed no signs of foul play, he added.

In his memoir, “The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption,” published earlier this year, King detailed the high-speed chase that led up to his beating on March 3, 1991 and how he went on to receive a $3.8 million settlement from the city of Los Angeles. Most of the money was lost, however, to bad investments, including a hip-hop record label he founded.

The 1992 riots, which were set off by the acquittals of the officers who beat King, lasted three days and left 55 people dead, more than 2,000 injured and swaths of Los Angeles on fire. At the height of the violence, King pleaded on television: “Can we all get along?”

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as “Celebrity Rehab.”

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.

“America’s been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all,” he says. “This part of my life is the easy part now.”

Criticism from LGBT activists has been swift, prompting the church to post this statement on its website:

The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason. We believe and hope that every person can find true Bible salvation and the mercy and grace of God in their lives.

DeAnna Ransom has a heart to help women.  The powerhouse gospel vocalist has used her God-given platform to encourage and inspire with her testimony of overcoming.  The award-winning singer’s brand new single, “Never Say Never…Again”, reminds women that in spite of past hurts, they can indeed love again.  To complement the single release, DeAnna is premiering the release of the video for “Never Say Never…Again” on Thursday, June 28, 2012 online.  Hosted on the premier network of Gospel Pioneer Dr. Bobby Jones, the online video release will be held exclusively at drbobbyjonesmagazine.com.  In addition to watching the video, attendees will be able to catch the first sneak peek of new music from the new soon to be released CD, to chime in, share their thoughts and ask questions in the site’s chat room speaking directly with Ransom and other special guests.  To RSVP for the event, log on to drbobbyjonesmagazine.com.

The video, which already received rave reviews at a recent Philadelphia screening, tackles issues very relevant in today’s society and captures some of Ransom’s real story. DeAnna says,”I wrote ‘Never Say Never…Again’ based on my real life experience.  Alone, broken, hurt, fearful and crying myself to sleep every night for three years thinking that was how it was always going to be; I was miserable.  Then I really embraced God’s love, healing and rebuilding and my life was transformed.  I want all of my sisters (and brothers!) who have been hurt or are hurting, to know that the pain of a battered or broken heart is not greater than the transforming love of God who will make you and your life brand new by allowing Him to love you back to wholeness.  I want everyone to get their smile, their trust and their future back when they watch this video.”
